The history of EVM Ltd, golf trolley sales, service and repairs in Kent
EVM Ltd was first established in 1988 by Ralph and Shirley Sands. Both worked for Unigate Dairies where Ralph was an electric vehicle fitter for 16 years, repairing milk floats and also working in the vehicle body shop. Shirley had also worked at Unigate, but she undertook a variety of other short careers in both the public and private sector. The combination led to two individuals, one with expertise in electronic and motorised vehicles, and the other in administrative and customer care, developing a strong team to create a new business.
The idea of starting a powered golf trolley business took a while to develop, with Electric Vehicle Maintenance (as it was formerly known), branching out into contracts for milk floats with companies such as garden centres and nurseries using milk floats, and also mobility scooters.
After a chance meeting with a businessman, who was developing and selling the Caddymatic golf trolley, the idea of electric golf trolley repairs was born.
From that day onwards. Ralph and Shirley both worked tirelessly to develop a business model and rapport with golf clubs in Surrey, Kent and East Sussex.
A mobile service then developed, with two separate vans visiting golf clubs up to 6 days a week each. Although the size of the rounds have diminished over the years, been deliberately reduced due to the overwhelming workload, we still continue our regular rounds to this day. For a while EVM Ltd even ran a golf trolley workshop in Headcorn village itself and another in Staplehurst which doubled up as a very busy village shop.
Many other golf trolley warehouses and golf shops have opened since, many not only selling and fitting golf clubs but also repairing electric golf trolleys. This has meant a growth in competition. However, we pride ourselves in being the original mobile golf trolley service centre in Kent and East Sussex, and there is probably no other firm out there with the experience that we have.
